WINNERS EMERGE IN THE FCCA ENVIRONMENTAL POSTER COMPETITION

Febuary 12, 2003

Pembroke Pines, FL. – (February 12, 2003) – The Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association is proud to announce the winners of the 2003 FCCA Foundation for the Caribbean Children’s Environment Poster Competition, 10-year old Samuel Barry from Dominica in the junior division and 16-year old Israel Singer from St. Maarten in the senior division. Students from throughout the Caribbean were invited to submit a poster with the theme “Our World is Precious…Save our Land & Seas.” Each student was invited to submit one poster, depicting at least three (3) ways in which his/her destination can make a difference in preserving the environment. Samuel’s poster is an abstract poster with a colleague of colors and ideas. The artwork focuses on ways of recycling and using unleaded fuel to preserve the ozone and being ecological friendly to the world we live in order to protect our wildlife. Israel’s poster done in vivid colored pencils represents the environment in two phases. One section of his work portrays the world being healthy, with clean waters, air and abundant rich soil. The other portion of the poster depicts a world of water pollution, which causes life in the ocean to die. Air pollution from factories and war poses health risks to humans. Protruding through the center of artwork is a drawing of the world with human hands gently embracing it. The world is ours to cherish and nurture, for it will be no more if we do not take the time to preserve it. The competition was judged in two age categories: a junior division for student’s age 12 years and under and a senior division for children age 13-16 years. This year entries were received from 16 Caribbean nations. Samuel and Isreal will each receive an educational scholarship of US $2,500. In addition, they were invited to participate in, and accept their prizes at, the 9th Annual FCCA Gala Dinner & Entertainment Extravaganza, March 6, 2003. Sponsored by the Association’s charitable arm, the FCCA Foundation for the Caribbean, the Environment Poster Competition was created to promote environmental awareness in the Caribbean region, as well as serving as a platform to utilize students’ creativity in identifying new and innovative Eco-friendly ideas. In the 12 and under age category, Vanessa Hertular, age 10 from Belize, won second place and 12-year-old Kevin John from St. Croix emerged as the third place winner. Second place in the 13–16 age category went to 13-year old Kelron Liburd from Nevis with Attainea Toulon, age 13 from the Dominica, placing third. The second place winners in the two age categories will each receive $1,500 and the third place winners will take home $1,000 each. To reward students for their efforts, all finalists (except first, second and third place winners in each category) submitted by their countries will receive US $200.00. Art supplies will also be donated to the schools of the first, second & third place winners. .
