Winners in the FCCA Environmental Poster Competition

Pines, FL. - (February 26, 2004) - The Florida-Caribbean
Cruise Association is proud to announce the winners of the 2004 FCCA
Foundation for the Caribbean's Environment
Poster Competition, 12-old Marlow Brown from Jamaica and 14-year-old Ilena George of the Turks and Caisos Islands.
Marlow
selected as the title of his poster " Let's Protect Jamaica" where
he depicts a few problems which presently affect Jamaican society,
such as improper garbage disposal, deforestation, burning and overflowing
sewage. He also illustrates Jamaica as a clean community; with trash
compactors placed in areas for proper garbage disposal, forested areas
with beautiful, healthy trees and clean playing areas for children.
Ilena's poster titled "Making
a Difference by Naturally Preserving Our World"depicts innovative
measures that can be taken to continue to improve and preserve the
natural environment. She illustrates four campaigns that her destination
can incorporate to preserve the environment: "Plant a Tree and Care
for It," "Renew, Reuse, Recycle Policy," "Pollution Control & Mitigation
Projects" and "Continuous Clean-up Campaign."
Students
from throughout the Caribbean were invited to submit a poster and select
a topic of their choice that promotes environmental awareness. Each
poster had to depict at least three (3) ways in which his/her destination
could make a difference in preserving the environment; each student
also had to submit a summary description of their poster. The competition
was judged in two age categories: a junior division for student?s age 12 years old and under, and a senior division for children age 13-16 years. This year entries were received from 14 Caribbean nations.
Marlow
and Ilena each will receive an educational scholarship of $2,500
US.
In addition, they have been invited to participate in and accept their
prizes at the 10th Annual FCCA Gala Dinner & Entertainment
Extravaganza, March 18, 2004.

Foundation for the Caribbean, the Environmental Poster Competition was created to promote environmental awareness throughout the Caribbean region, as well as serving as a platform to utilize students? creativity in identifying new and innovative eco-friendly ideas.
In
the 12 and under age category, Vedeesha John, age 11 from St. Vincent
and the Grenadines, won second place and 11-year-old Samuel Barry from
Dominica emerged as the third place winner. Second place in the 13 ? 16 age category went to 14-year old Rochelle Reneau from Belize with Donovan McKenzie, age 15 from the Bahamas, placing third. The second place winners in the two age categories will each receive $1,500
US and the third place winners will take home $1,000
US each.
To
reward students for their efforts, all other finalists, submitted by
their countries, will receive $200.00 US. Art supplies will also be
donated to the schools of the first, second & third place winners in each category.
