Students Gear Up for 2002 FCCA
Environmental Poster Competition

It is that time of year again, as Caribbean students prepare for the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) 2002 Children’s Environmental Poster Competition with the theme “The Nature of the Islands: Plants and Animals of the Caribbean.”

The competition, now in its fourth year has been very successful in promoting environmental awareness and stimulating creativity among students throughout the Caribbean Region. In addition, this program has also assisted with the advancing of student’s education through the provision of monetary scholarships. This year students will be competing in two age categories: Category one for children ages 12 years and under and Category two for children ages 13-16 years. Each student must submit a poster depicting at least three (3) plants and animals from the Caribbean or specific to his/her destination and the effect each has on the environment.

The first, second and third place winners in each category will be awarded academic scholarships of US$2,500, US$1,500 and US$1,000, respectively, with their schools receiving art supplies. To reward entrants for their effort, finalist in both categories will also be awarded US$200.

In addition to the scholarships, first place winners from both categories, will be invited to accept their prizes at the 8th Annual FCCA Gala Dinner in Miami, Florida on March 14, 2002.
The competition is coordinated through the Ministry of Tourism or tourism office in each destination. All entries must be submitted to the FCCA on or before Monday, February 4, 2002. Posters must be on a standard size (22”x 28”) poster/bristol board and may be in color, black and white, or a collage; in whatever medium the entrant chooses.

Here’s a look back at the poster competition’s winners over the past two years. In 2000 the FCCA announced 16-year-old Cary Eaglin, Jr. from the US Virgin Islands (Senior division) and 10-year-old Ilana George of the Turks & Caicos Islands (Junior division) as first place winners in their respective divisions. The following year, 2001-16 year old Samal Duggins from St. Kitts (Senior division) and 11 year old Khamiya Henry of Trinidad (Junior division) emerged as winners.
